I think you make a great point about the culture between Cali and FL. The mindset in Cali tends to be anything is possible just go for it, as opposed to finding reasons why you can't do it in FL. Neither is important it's up to each person or group of people to stay focused and dedicated to a goal to be successful. If the user's group goal is to help the Central Florida commuinity grow then every meeting should incorporate something towards the growth of the members such as skill level, exposure, or group size. I do know that reading this blog has made me want to attend a user group meeting to further my knowledge in developing and networking to meet others in the field. Maybe I will see you at the next meeting..

Driving home from the Central Florida Fair along Highway 50 (W. Colonial), my wife asked me why or how it comes to be that a particular stretch of highway develops a monoculture -- in this case, car dealerships.

I think it is similar to what you are talking about -- it is easier and maybe less frightening to be among people who are doing things like what you are or want to be doing, and comforting to run into others who have been there and done that.

That doesn't mean that you CAN'T have a great car dealership or startup success in another place, but the path is less traveled and there may be some startup infrastructure out West that is lacking here. Clearly the government of California has fostered this activity for decades.

At this point, I think VC is the number 2 reason to be in the Valley, and people/networking is the number 1 reason.

There is probably a larger, but pretty well-defined set of factors that contributed to this phenomenon. Someone has studied it, I'm sure.
